Welcome to the fifth grade!
My name is Mrs. Oliveira. I want to start the year off by letting you know a little about me. I grew up in Northwest Indiana, right by Lake Michigan. I have a younger brother, Elliot, who is serving in the Air Force in Japan. My mom and my dad are divorced, but they both still live in Indiana.
When I was young I loved to ride my bike and swim in our river behind our house. I also did a ton of reading when I was younger and I loved to play outside. I went to college at Purdue (go Boilermakers!) and graduated four years ago. This will be my fourth year teaching. I mostly taught fifth grade, but I taught fourth grade for one year. I moved to Ohio two years ago with my husband, Renan, who is from Brazil. I'm trying to learn Portuguese (the language they speak in Brazil), but it's taking me a really long time. I have two dogs, both of them are insane and not terribly bright, but I love them anyways! I love to read, write, and run. My favorite books are the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, Walk Two Moons, Number the Stars, Harry Potter... seriously there are too many to list. I love talking about books!.
We'll be reading and writing a lot this year, but you'll have quite a bit of choice in what you read and write. We will be reading novels, short stories, poems, non-fiction. In writing, we'll write some fiction, some non-fiction, poetry, persuasive writing, and some "just for fun" writings. In science, we'll be studying space, ecosystems, light, sound, and body systems.
